Content and Interactivity

MilitaryHOMEFRONT represents its mission and presents content clearly, utilizing four distinct areas: • The Homepage presents the most important information and contains a Headlines section that highlights the latest QoL information. • Three main tabs containing QoL information appropriate to each audience: - Troops and Families - Leadership - Service Providers DoD Program Managers maintain the information contained within each tab to ensure that the most up-to-date content is provided to the user. MilitaryHOMEFRONT offers a feedback form, welcoming suggestions from users. In addition, MilitaryHOMEFRONT offers online Newsletters and Announcements with the latest QoL information available through MilitaryHOMEFRONT.

Design, Usability and Accessibility

The MilitaryHOMEFRONT is designed so that graphics load more quickly in graphics-capable browsers and navigational graphics (topic brand images) are conveyed with text to allow users to quickly understand topic themes, in combination with enabling users with access disabilities to navigate the MilitaryHOMEFRONT using standards-based assistive technology. All MilitaryHOMEFRONT images, video clips, audio files, etc. utilize the alternative text 'ALT’ tag in the HTML code. Visually impaired users can learn the layout from one page and apply it to subsequent pages. This simplicity also enables continued use of developments in technology without compromising accessibility.

Evaluation and Metrics

The DoD has contracted with DMI, Incorporated to conduct usability testing on the MilitaryHOMEFRONT. DMI conducted the first round with service members, families and leaders in April 2006, using timed performance tests based on scenarios presented to the participants. DMI also debriefed the participants to obtain their perceptions of the usability and aesthetics of the site. DMI will continue periodic usability testing. As a result of the first round of testing, the Leadership tab of MHF has been completely redesigned. The new structure and content will be launched in September, following a thorough review by the DoD subject matter experts.
